Build archaeometallurgy together

The Institute for Archaeo-Metallurgical Studies (IAMS) is an international research organisation advancing the understanding of mining and metallurgy from prehistory to the modern era, and their lasting cultural, technological, and historical significance.

As a registered UK charity, IAMS is affiliated with the UCL Institute of Archaeology (London) and further associated with the Cyprus Institute (Nicosia) and the University of Cambridge (UK), ensuring strong academic governance, scientific rigour and global reach.

IAMS delivers an annual intensive training programme and a series of lectures, scholarly support and funding that brings together leading scholars and early-career researchers in archaeometallurgy.

Through this programme, IAMS builds research capacity, supports skills transfer, and fosters international scholarly networks in a growing interdisciplinary field. Investment in IAMS directly contributes to high-impact training, knowledge exchange, and the long-term sustainability of archaeological science expertise.

Message from the Chairman.

“Across the world, metals play a key role in furthering civilization and underpinning general standards of living. Metals and mining industries are forward-looking and thereby continuing to secure our future. But we must not forget the past, nor forget the achievements of our forebears who laid the foundations of today’s metal industries. Documenting the history of metal technology world-wide is what IAMS does extremely well and I am proud to have helped leading mining companies to support this work through post-graduate student scholarships and research funding.”
